St Johns Shelter For Women and Children

I went to the shelter last night and helped serve dinner. It was totally fun to serve these people and I met a lot of the staff. Its a great organization. They are doing a great service to the community. This shelter was birthed by St Johns Church in 1985 when they noticed a increasing number of women with children sleeping on the steps of the church. OUR PROGRAM
St. John's Shelter for Women and Children provides emergency shelter to women and children solely on the basis of the availability of beds. In an atmosphere that respects diversity and affirms the dignity of each individual, case managers and trained counselors meet with clients to assess strengths and needs and to begin to identify recurring obstacles. Short and long-term goals leading to permanent stability are addressed in individualized case plans.
Our collaboration with local agencies enables us to connect our clients to experts in their fields. Family Service Agency provides mental health counselor and alcohol and drug counselors at the Shelter. Sacramento Self-Help Housing serves as our housing specialist, insuring that clients have access to affordable rentals and assistance in applying for other housing programs for homeless women. Agencies such as Breaking Barriers, Planned Parenthood, Sacramento County Office of Education, One-Stop Career Center, Health Care for the Homeless, serve as resources for all our residents.
St. John's is always interested in collaborating with other agencies to provide ongoing or new services to our women and children. Contact the Shelter for more information.
A quality program is also provided for those most traumatized by homelessness the children. Our Children's Program has dedicated staff and volunteers that provide activities to enable the children to learn positive behavior in dealing with conflict resolution, anger issues and cooperative play. Mike- It is really cool that you went to the shelter. One thing that I appreciate that you did for us here was provide some of the requirements for the shelter. This is helpful for us so that we can know how to direct people when we are talking with homeless folks on the street. Thank you so much.
