Soup Event Update

The "Soup in the Streets" (SITS) homeless outreach on 9/23/07 was awesome. Great job everyone! It seemed to me that a genuine softness permeated the evening. It makes such a difference to just pray, set out the big things we're giving away, and start building relationships. Setting things up in a self-serve fashion removes the transactional feel and frees us up to engage in conversations with people. The result is that many of our guests initiate conversation, stay longer, and teach us how to love and pray for them in practical and meaningful ways. It was also fun to have a lot of new volunteers with us.

Invite people to upcoming events with your friends via the S&G fall/winter brochure here.

Start now to now to gather socks, gloves, beanies and scarves for the Oct. outreach.

Let’s also remember to continue praying for the people we met last night. Feel free to name the ones you recall by name in the comments section.

Nick & Cindy – Nick is working with a social worker, Ralph, at the Salvation Army to try to find a longer term housing option. Nick is also struggling through the recent loss of his parents and is looking for help dealing with his grief in the midst of relationship.

JR & Michelle – JR is struggling with feelings of loneliness and is looking for relationships that will help him to choose the right thing. Michelle is an enthusiastic friend that is helping JR to learn to make the right choice day after day. JR and Michelle need renewed strength in the morning day by day to continue pursuing God’s best in their lives.

Gaynelle – last night’s singer with the kitty is learning to lean on the goodness of God in the trials of life. Pray that the Word of God would continue to fill her heart and mind with hope and purpose.

A man named Derrick is having a very difficult time being away from his four kids and finding out what he needs to do next. He needs direction and wisdom and something needs to happen.

I think that one good thing about this past event is that we had good conversation and relationship building with people and that we avoided a "food line" paradigm by bringing relationship with food. That's a good thing to keep on doing.

It was a good night we had. The more we do this we learn what works and we all seem to find our place within the body.
