How important is it?

In response to Ryan's post, I decided to share why I think this group is such a worthy cause. As someone commented, I think a lot of the reason that we don't take action is that the problem does not affect us personally.

But that can also be an excuse. I've noticed in myself that the more I choose to be exposed to what is happening in the world, the more I care to do something about it. It isn't just about having compassion for others... it requires empathy - putting ourselves in the shoes of those who are hurting in the world.

And it doesn't have to consume your life to go about changing things. But just do some small things that can have a lsmall but meaningful impact. Use things that you like or your abilities.

Run a 10K run to raise money for World Vision. While you're doing that, let people know what you are doing and let them know how they can help. Write to politicians to voice your concern that so many innocent people are quietly being massacred and displaced in Sudan and Uganda (it's hard to believe this is going on after we saw what happened in Rwanda). Spend some time at a local orphanage for kids that have grown up with abusive and neglective parents. Use your professional skills to benefit someone in need who couldn't afford it normally.

Gandhi said, "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." It's easy to complain about injustice and quote figures and numbers, but if we don't do something about it, we are wasting our breath.

Which is why I'm so excited about this group. It provides us with an opportunity to connect with those who are taking action for purposes bigger than our own little sphere.

Great words Tony. I think you are right on that it is all about being informed and then finding simple ways to enter into action. I like how you said, it is about "putting ourselves in the shoes of those who are hurting in the world."

I think maybe why that is so difficult is because it requires selflessness. The focus than cannot be on ourselves but must be on serving others. Oh, do I have a lot to learn here!!!

So today, Tuesday, 9/12/06, how is it that I can be an advocate for those who are in unfortunate circumstances as I go about my business day? This is a question that I want to get good at asking because I want to learn to be a person who stands up for others and does the intentional work of love rather than doing nothing.

Good point Sarah. It is scary when press is hindered. If we can't hear the full story, then that is always a wonder of why. On that note, the press sometimes leaks some information that they ought not to, so they need to be responsible with their occupation (that's no excuse for censorship though).
